The former child actor, who made his stage debut playing Friedrich in The Sound Of Music in London’s West End, never went to drama school, but says he received his training working for BBC radio. He remembers it was always a challenge and he was asked to provide voice characters ranging from 16-year-old teens to 90-year-old men.

“You never know what you will asked to do,” laughs the versatile actor. “I’ve sometimes had to voice the most boring scripts in the world for accounting firms and the like. “There was one I remember for a certain oil company that just went on for ages and was also for accountants. I didn’t know what I was talking about, but they were happy with it. “I also agreed one time to do a voiceover for the New Testament. “I thought it would take a few days and it took three months. I have no idea the Bible was so long, but I learned a lot. Phrases like ‘filthy lucre” and “you see as through a glass darkly” all come from the Bible.”

David’s sister-in-law even found his voice speaking to her when she boarded a flight to Qatar in the Middle East to see him in new musical Aspire – To Be A Star. David has now set up a studio at his home to cope with all the voiceover work that comes his way – “I live in the countryside so it’s lovely and quiet apart from the odd moo from a cow” – and his voice is on websites around the world.

“Some people know me for doing musicals – I’ve done shows like Always and Sheridan Morley’s Noel & Gertie in the West End and did Hello Dolly with Anita Dobson at the Belgrade. “On television I have done every soap… apart from Corrie. I’ve done Emmerdale, The Bill and EastEnders twice and I suppose young people know me best from Hollyoaks. “I think people see me and say ‘I know him, but where do I know him from?’ and I don’t mind that. I like being a bit of a chameleon and taking people by surprise. “It’s like the voiceover work. They like the British accent for American adverts, but here I’m playing an American with an American accent. It’s great.”
